I am hoping for an influx of information on this and welcome all comments and information possible. Recently I came into contact with a woman who has lymph edema from a breast surgery she had in 1985. Her Dr. initially had no knowledge of anything physical therapy could do to reduce her swelling, she found out over the internet about a massage that can be done that greatly reduces the swelling. To add to this, she has only been able to find three persons who even know of this massage, let alone who are able to perform it. My questions are:
1. Is this a valid massage?
2. If yes, why is it not more mainstream?
3. Where can it be learned?
4. Why are there so few therapists in the Greater Phoenix area that have any knowledge of this, if it is an accepted therapeutical practice? Again I welcome all comments and information on this. Thank you for your time!

The most informative sites seem to be from Australia. Try lymphedema australia. I see a few seminars on Rehab Edge being advertised.

Try looking for 'Complex physiotherapy' and 'lymphoedema' - it is a silly name for a technique, but it has been around for about 12 years and we have specialist physios with the procedure, so it does work. It is a highly specific form of bandaging and exercise for limbs that is fairly costly, and the pressure garment worn is also costly.
I will try and find out more about it (I have not been in a position to be trained for it)but you should be able to find info with a search for complex physiotherapy.

I think it's a very effective technique from what I've seen. When I was on my clinicals during PT school, at least 2-3 PTs were specialized in the lymphedema technique. They would spend a good 45 minutes to 1 hour with patients for massage and them wrap them up, usually using a JOSBT garment. I think it's fantastic what they can do and the patients do find comfort after the treatment...not to mention an obvious decrease in edema.

Thank you Jim and Nari, I really appreciate your help. I think I've just realized where my first CEU's are going to come from when I graduate! I did a dog pile search on the terms Jim gave above and found several classes that are certified courses. They will allow you to sit for the LANA licencing for MLD/CDT. Here is the specific website if you are interested. http://www.acols.com/
