I was recently diagnosted with an long thoracic nerve palsy.  I am active and excersise 3 days a week.  I also play golf once a week.  I am told that the nerve will heal itself in about 1 year.  My concerns are many.  What excersise can be done safely and at the same time strenghten my compensatory muscles?  I can not do push ups at all as I am out of balance and the muscle group does not respond.  How do I keep tone in the pectoral and lat's?  My workout over the weekend was to cut back by 50% on all my weight machines.  There was no pain at all when I did this.
I also went the driving range this weekend to see what range of motion I have in my golf swing and it is fine except I just do not have the same strength.  Am I hurting the nerve by swinging the golf club?  Here again I am swinging at about 75% speed.  Bottom line......is the rule of thumb "if it hurts.....stop"?  I am hurting my self further with these activities?

You should see a physical therapist to help you design a program to assist your recovery.  Long Thoracic Nerve Palsy can be a long and painful process that can without adequate examination of the symptoms can cause longer rehab periods.   And yes, you can hurt yourself by returning to activity too soon with any condition.  However,  I would take extra care in your case simply because of the significant amount of abnormal movement patterns that occur with your problem.
