I have a BA (Anthropology, 3.75GPA) and scored over 1200 on the GRE. I'm 31 y.o. and considering a career change to P.T. .Exercise and health have always been an important part of my life and I hope a career in this field will be more rewarding for me. Is a MA preferable for most positions? If so I'm in store for about 6 years of training at which time i'll be 37-38 y.o. . Is it realistic to try and start a PT career at this age?

You wouldn't be looking at 6 years. You could finish whatever pre-reqs you lack in 1-2 semesters and apply for a program. The DPT programs are 2.5 yrs. They are barely any longer than the masters program, and the profession is moving toward the DPT which will soon be the only thing offered - don't waste your time with the masters, go ahead and get the doctorate. Same amount of time, same price. You have a good GPA and GRE score. I definitely think you could get in the program of your choice. I went the advanced undergraduate entry route that my school offered, had a 4.0 and got a 1220 on the GRE. Good luck!

I started PT school at age 30. My program was three years for a masters. I went an additional year for the transitionall DPT. Now the program is 3 years (the same) for the DPT. If you really want it, go for it.

It's not too late! The years are going to go by anyway so you might as well go for it...that's how I looked at it. At 41, I wanted to be a PT but I didn't have my bachelor's yet and all the PT schools transitioned to the Masters. That was too much for me, a single mother at the time but I would have done the PT if I had a bachelors already. I chose the PTA and I'm so glad I did. I still make good money working part time though I could do pretty well full time too. The demand is so high for theapy jobs. I was hired with a sign on bonus before I graduated. If it is your dream to be a PT then go for it.

Not too late, one of the aids in our clinic works full time and is in the first semester of her masters OT program, its not easy, but her dream is to work as an OT w/ children. She is doing it and doing well. Once you pass your NPTE, the real work begins.
