what is the correct and efficient method of stretching the hamstring muscles ? is it in supine lying or in side lying position of the patient ? give reasons.

It depends why you want to stretch them in the first place. Give more info please.
Is it post tear? Is it associated with AND? Is it part of a mechanical reasoning based rehab programme for, for example back pain? (All of the above would make stretching questionable regardless, mind you!)
