On Dec. 31 2006 I came back from a 6.7 mile run, normal for me, and 1/2 hr. later had anterior pain in the hip at the moment of foot touchdown and weight bearing. Pain lasted 4 days. Tried to run a couple more times, same deal, 4 days of pain after each attempt to run a few miles. After 10 days off, Jan. 17 was my last attempt at running. All Pain was AFTER, not DURING runs.
Dr. told me to take 4 weeks off, thought it was soft tissue injury and didn't order MRI.
On the other hand, I suspected a sfx of femoral neck, despite general physician not suspecting it, so for 6 weeks starting Jan. 18th I avoided all weight bearing exercises -- no running, elliptical, biking, no hopping exercises, etc. I had no pain at all this entire period and I only did swimming and upper body weights.
In early March I saw the Orthopedic Surgeon and he made a diagnosis of stress reaction in the lesser trochanter, confirmed by MRI.
He did not recommend crutches if I had no pain, which I didn't. He recommended I could do elliptical, but told me to avoid walking exercise, but I foolishly ignored the latter piece of advice since I was alreay 8 weeks along since the last date of injury and last run. So at week 8 I started walking for exercise - 2 miles 3 times a week. At week 10 I started doing baby-steps running for 1 minute, mixed into my walks. Meanwhile, I was also doing elliptical (45 min) 2 days per week, all with no pain. So I was working out 2 days elliptical and 3 days walking at week 10.
At the end of week 10, I reinjured my hip even worse on March 30. It was WORSE this time -- even had pain when sitting and shifting my weight, or lying on affected hip. Pain lasted 7 days this time, not 4 days like before. In addition, it is now 18 days post-reinjury, and I still have hip pain if I overdo it walking at the grocery store more than 1 hour, although less than 1/2 hour is pain-free, however. I also have pain later the same day if I lift anything weighing more than 30 pounds, such as curling barbells, 50 pound crates of bottled water, or other heavy things carried during shopping trips.
I am looking for advice -- how much longer to wait for bone healing before doing different activities this time around. My orthopedic surgeon will see me again April 27, but there will be no new MRI ordered, only xray, since it hasn't been that long since my initial (March 6) MRI. The March 4 Xray never did show anything, even 2 months post injury.
(1) Should I use crutches, even if I have no pain? (2) Should I avoid carrying groceries, even if no pain? (3) Should I avoid walking even short periods at grocery (pain level after 1 hour is mild, but noticable, and goes away right away with rest). (4) If the reinjury was 10 weeks after the last run, how long should I wait before trying to walk for exercise this time? (5) Last time I found I could walk once per week starting around 7 weeks, with no after effects. Can I begin walking once per week at around 7 to 10 weeks this time, or should I wait longer. (6) Last time I did elliptical at 6 weeks, but had mild lower back soreness afterwards, which is normal for me on that machine. Should I avoid elliptical this time because the hip flexors attach to the lesser trochanter? (7) Last time I tried baby-steps jogging, lifting feet 3 to 6 inches from ground, short strides of 18 inches, for duration of 1 MINUTE, 3 sets. 10 weeks was too soon because I got injured. Should I wait 3 months, or maybe 4 months before trying again this time around?
