Has there ever been a relative correlation between what a hand can grip on a JAMAR vs. a single hand carry?

I know from experience that hand dyno numbers are higher than carrying capacity numbers. WHat I am looking to do is back up my objective findings during FCE's where patient's BS their hand grip testing then go and grab a 30 pound box or 20 pound purse and carry it off for a 100 feet.

Thanks

Dan

There will be a pattern that you should see with FCEs if the client is not giving full effort. Look for multiplpe clues not just grip/carry.

With regards to grip strength testing do the five position test - this should provide a nice bell shaped curve with position 2/3 being the strongest. Try rapid alternating grip strength testing and test at multiple times during the FCE to check for consistency. If they are truely giving full effort then there should not be much variation in their grip strength with repetitive testing. In other words with a grip say of 100# there might be a 5-10 pound variation with rep testing. However if they are getting say 20# there should not be this much variation.

Check for muscle recruitment as they grip - full effort will recruit muscles throughout the UE. If their grip is say 20 then I do not feel they could do the 30 carry without extreme difficulty. I have done over 200 FCEs and never found where someone can single handed carry more than they can grip

thanks ortho

IS there any research on correlation of grip strength to functional activities?

Dan
