Saw a female patient 30 weeks pregnant with a displaced rib (vertebrocoastal junction). I was able to get the rib back in place, but it did not stay... Any ideas to conservatively manage this?

I assume is is because she is pragnant. When my wife was a pragant a co-worker of hers was prangant as well, and had the same problem. She was told not to lay on her side, try not bending over, and not carry heavy items.

I don't think moving it around during this time of the pregnancy would be warranted. It might be something to look into once the pregnancy is over.

My concern was how it happened and hw it was fixed. Since she is late in her pregnancy one needs to me mindful of aggressive repetitive mobilzation/manipulation. She will be producing hormones which are seeking to soften many holding elements to prepare for delivery.

(original poster here - old login is not working...). OAK, please steer us on the right path if you can... what you have posted doesn't really help, but I would be happy to have the benefit of your knowledge. As to how the rib became displaced: she couldn't pin it to anything... she had a slip on ice 7-10 days before pain & other symptoms came up. However, she did not think that had anything to do with it. She is a very high level rock-climber who was continuing to train, but at a reduced level.

I'll bite: how was it established that the rib was "displaced"? How was it established it "was back in place"? What tests - re-tests were performed?

A river in Egypt? I'm so sorry OAK, I couldn't help myself but I do agree to address it as a sprain/strain vs something "out of place"

Thanks Oak, hmgross & others. The full story is that I am a soon to graduate student and a friend back home wrote me about her 'displaced rib'. She said he did a manip, she heard a pop and "it went back in but later came out" and that she still had pain ++. I suspect what happened is that the PT found a structural anomaly, treated it with an appropriate manip, but failed to explain the 'displaced rib' as a sprain / strain and warn against post treatment soreness. any further comments are welcome... Thanks again.
