When I fractured mine, I hated the sling. I used it one day... took the stupid thing off, continued working as physical therapist but not using the fractured upper extremity for 6 weeks and actually preferred the back pocket of my jeans to hang my thumb. Pain as my guide worked just fine. My clavicle was fractured in 2 places with a chunk of bone oriented wrong between the breaks... I assume it healed fine... I have normal function of my shoulder. The only good thing about using a sling would be you definitely would not be able to use the involved upper extremity. I had the experience that the darn box of VHI exercise cards went to fall off the counter when I wasn't coordinated enough to yank the cards out and because I wasn't in the sling, I did grab the thing so it wouldn't fall to the ground and make a major mess. That was very, very painful.

thanks. I am in zero pain and have full motion, just some pec tightness. But i can feel the new 'hinge' at my mid clavical so i figure that it is not healed nearly enuff to be using it. the most im using for is driving a standard truck(r arm)

with a clavicle #, it IS important to have good union, whether in bayonet or ideal alignment. I have seen two patients in 23 years with pseudo-joints due to permanent non-union and they have quite a few issues with arm use - from limited strength and stabilisation of the shoulder, to occasional neural signs in the arm. I would be very careful with the gear shifting - can delay the union if you move it too much...
