Hi, my name is Tiffany. I am currently enrolled in school for Medical Administration, but have recently decided that this is not the career path for me. I have always been interested in Physical Therapy and feel that it would be a very rewarding career. If anyone could give me any feedback (positive or negative), in choosing this career option. Pls do so.

Thank you,

Check out the APTA's website where you will find descriptions of the career and what you will need to do.

The best way to find out about PT is to volunteer in a variety of places and settings. You will need to have volunteer hours to get into school anyway.

Good luck!

Hi Tiffany,

I will quote you this post I saw on another BB from someone named Ros, who is a PT of about 30 years. She was writing to a soon-to-graduate PT about career options, and as her post was more eloquent than most I have reproduced part of it:

"My bias is very strongly towards getting a strong hospital basis & exposure & yes also in all those bits you don't really like. The wide exposure I think gives us a much better & stronger foundation to build on no matter what direction you ultimately take.

".There's nothing like working with neuro patients to make you learn to see the whole body not just bits,
.there's nothing like working with terminal patients to teach you about the depths of your own soul & what really matters in people's lives,
.there's nothing like working with children to teach you the resilience of this thing we call a body,
.there's nothing like working with patients who are never going to get better to teach you
about humility & the importance of the bigger picture,
.there's nothing like working in ICU to teach you about the two edged sword of modern medicine

"I could go on & on, because in physio you do not have to lock yourself into a path & stay on it - I've reinvented myself at least three times thus far & I sense another direction rearing its head shortly.

"My advice would be exposure yourself to wide learning opportunities, stay passionate, continually be amazed & never stop asking questions; realizing that every patient you see has something new to teach you, you are guaranteed a wonderful career."

I would add that there are opportunities to travel and work anywhere in the world. With direct access where you live, you can design your own work life. Good luck Tiffany, whatever you decide to do, whether that is PT or not.

Hello,
I definitely agree with both posts stated above. There is nothing more fulfilling than being a PT and what we can do. Experience and knowledge will help you choose a fantastic path into this career.
