I have several people tell me about the great relief they had with castor oil applied topically to arthritic joints with a great reduction in pain. I also had 2 patients bring in articles from local newspapers written by physicians about the topic as well. What is up with this?????

I am not familiar with castor oil, but I have seen studies on various topical agents that have been shown to be more or as effective as NSAIDs for arthritic pain.

Celadrin is one such substance that has been shown to provide pain relief. www.celadrin.com

Also, there are other substances that provide temporary relief such as Biofreeze, Sombra, Flexall, etc.

Kid PT, Caster oil was an old fashioned treatment for several conditions but fell out of favour by the 50s. It was taken internally as a purgative by thousands weekly, on friday nights. It was used on inflammed joints, especially gout, boils and 'bad skin'. The liver I can remember was the recipient of caster oil poultices. A towel was soaked in oil and wrung out and laid over the liver and a hot water bottle placed on top till it cooled. Different countries had different organs which were blamed for ill health, some the liver or heart or kidneys and the poultice was used on the offending area. British tropical medicine hospitals used castor oil to bring worms to the surface of the patients skin where the little wrigglers could be be removed!
