Hello everyone. I am a student on my first clinical rotation and am preparing for my inservice. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for sources and articles or just personal opinions on specific cardiac precautions. The majority of patients I see in this hospital setting are s/p some type of cardiac surgery or have a cardiac condition. I would like to present on precautions to take with these patients such as sternal, pacemaker, etc. but I am not having much luck with my research. Thank you for any help you may offer!

Welcome Agovo,
Here are some cardiac precautions I use for FCE testing and work hardening/conditioning. They may be a bit aggressive as these patients are potentially at high level, or at least in the subactue or chronic phases of healing and performing potentually fairly physical tasks, but this may be a good starting point for you.
1) Stop activity if Resting BP exceeds 160/100
2) Stop activity if Resting HR of 120 or greater BPM, or exceeds 85% of predicted maximal HR.
3) Stop activity if complaints or signs of: dizziness, SOB, clammy skin, lightheadedness or chest pain.
Of course monitor your cardiac patients HR and BP and response to treatment or change in pressure (orthostatic hypotension).
Those that work in more acute settings or cardiac care may have some other responses.
Thanks!
