Hello. I am not a PT, but I am hoping that someone will be kind enough to answer my question. I injured my knee last spring and I have been diagnosed with a bone bruise on my femur bone. My orthopedic surgeon gave me a cortisone shot and told me no exercise for a month. I asked him about leg exercises to keep my muscles strong. He said that I could do some, but to just make sure that they don't stress out the joint line. I had been to PT (3 months ago) before I went to the surgeon where my PT helped me to strengthen my quad muscles and calf muscles. He had me do straight leg raises, side leg raises, calf raises, squats, pushing down on a towel using my quad muscles, etc. So, I have been taught how to properly do the exercises to strenghten the quads/calves, but I don't know which ones will stress out the joint area. I noticed that I am starting to lose all of my quad muscles due to no exercise and my range of motion is slightly decreased when I try to extend my leg straight out. Can someone PLEASE tell me which exercises I can do that won't stress out the joint line. My pain is around the medial meniscus area. I don't see my surgeon again for two more weeks and I am concerned about my decreased range of motion. Thanks so much for your response.

Unfortunately, in a forum such as this, we cannot provide the information you are seeking. You need to see your surgeon again and ask to be referred to a PT for appropriate education and guidance. Good luck!

Hi, why not try calling the PT you saw and ask that person's advice. Perhaps they can give you some direction.

Hi. Thanks for your responses. I understand that you can't give out medical advice over the internet. Maybe someone can answer this question for me. Someone had mentioned contacting my PT that previously treated me. I have an HMO and have to have a referral to services. Since I no longer see him for direct services (I was last treated in September), would he be able to give me info over the phone regarding the exercises that we worked on in therapy or it is the kind of thing where I would need to be reevaluated and actually seen for a PT session. I really respect my PT and don't want to be asking him to provide me with info over the phone that he is not allowed to provide without him actually haven spoken with my surgeon concerning my current condition.

If he treated you in the past, and all you need is clarification on these exercises, or a brief review, I cannot see why he would need you to go through the referral process, or why he would even bill for this. It's just good customer service to take care of your ex-patient's in this manner
