Hi,

I received a C in Gross Anatomy. I was wondering about my chances for PT school. Does this automatically put me on the bottom of the pile? Should I retake the class at a j.c. (the one I already took did have a cadaver lab) that doesn't use cadavers? I received a B in physiology class and an A in the lab.  I believe that having access to a cadaver is unique for undergrad and this is why I am wondering if I should re take a class that is essentially more basic in order to improve my grade.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

What are your grades like in the other pre-req classes?  PT programs typically like at your core sciences GPA..

Some PT programs look not only at your overall GPA but your science GPA. You might want to take the same course over again. At least come interview time when they look at it, they will see that you made the effort to improve your grade. Some of my former classmates got questions about any "C" grade that was on their transcript, especially if it was any of the sciences.

I agree w Herbie, dont get too hung up on your C, what does your entire picture looks like? extra curricular activities, work, any honor or deans lists?
A C is not check mate, strenous circumstances at the time of your C can also affect your grades. You will be allowed to explain during your interview. If your applying to a REALLY competitive school, retake.

Once in the PT program, you will see an anatomy course again. Heard of many people taking "anatomy" but not getting credit for it and taking it while in the program.

I personally think you will be fine.  What programs are looking to apply too?  Talk with the director, it does help.  An option would be when you apply, don't use the C, take the class over this up coming spring semester.  If you don't use the C, your GPA will loook better when you apply.  How long ago did you take Antatomy?

I went to a pretty competitive PT school.  A "c" in anatomy or other core sciences was a red flag.  I also sat on an interview panel as a student once in PT school.  The interviewers were hard core.  They looked at a "C" in anatomy or any core science course as a high risk of failure.  In our program Anatomy was was the first and only class taken all summer and if you got lower than a "C" you never proceed through the rest of the curriculum.  Some students that failed lost interest and never returned (went on to something else), others had to really fight to get back into the program the following year.  All I am saying is that the school I went to did'nt like red flags because it meant that they lost out on a lot of money and it messed up their outcomes.  So if you are able to you may want to consider retaking the class and not using that "C", if that is possible.  Good luck to you!

Thanks for all the feedback. Retaking it would give my GPA a boost cause it was a 5 credit class. I took it three years ago and the grade was a result of doing bad on the first test and working 30 hours with a full course load throughout the semester.
