Interested in hearing what all of your favorite journals are. Include why it is your favorite, accessability (on the web or library), cost, etc. Especially interested in foreign journals.

Mine are as follows:

The American Journal of Sports Medicine: Probably the best thing since sliced bread. Taught me more about orthopaedics, theory and practice than anything else. Students can get this for around $60 a year!

Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery: Doesn't always cover a copic that is pertinent to PT, but details surgery and theory in such a way as to create the thought process necessary for proper rehab.

Spine: Expensive, but often contains articles that deal with rehabilitation, manipulation, mobilization, and even chronic pain/worker's compensation/auto claims. Also explains surgical technique.

Biomechanics, O&P Business News: Hey, they're free, and often contain some very good information with a lot of cross over between PT and OP/podiatry/pedorthics

Advance: An appealing title usually leads to information that was geared more for my Mom than for me.

Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons: Usually long, instructional articles dealing with particular conditions. Very educational.

JOSPT/Physical Therapy: Somewhat helpful, but not worth the cost to me.

Orthopedics (Ortho Blue Journal): Fairly informative, once described to me by a surgeon as "medical journal lite"

Foot & Ankle International: Informative, but haven't read one in over 5 years.

Others I would like to have the time to read include: Archives of Physical Medicine and JAMA.

John:

I would have to say that two have been really important to clinical practice for me. Neither of them is a PT journal.

1. Am J Sports Med. Always lot's of great articles. Can't beat the price!!

2. Spine. Used to get it at my previous office. Haven't picked one up in a few months. Spine is the preminent journal for spinal disorders. Great material and contributions from DCs, PhDs, engineers and PTs also. However, it is heavily slanted towards the interventionists. There are ton of articles about surgical techniques despite the fact that surgery is becoming a less and less appealing option for most patients. Conservative care get's shortchanged a bit.

I also read the journal of the human factors/ergonomics society.....but this one is heavily slanted towards psychology.

I read the journal clinical biomechanics (quarterly........very cheap) and occaisionaly there is an article of interest.

I read PT and occaisionally JOSPT but I don't always find them to be useful.

Let's hear the other choices!!!!!!

The only journals I get are Physiotherapy Canada and Othopaedic Division Review.

Physiotherapy Canada is usually pretty low quality. For some reason Paul Stratford publishes in it, so I usually check for his name before I file it. There is a new scientific editor (Drew's friend Susan Harris). So it might improve.

ODR is usally really good when they use articles published in other journals. When they try to put something original it is usually not good.

The papers I have been reading lately are mostly out of j.biomechanics. Many are out of clinical biomechanics or jbjs and several from spine. Anyone else notice a drop in quality of articles in spine lately?

90% of the articles I download from the library. Got to love electronic journals.

Doug,

Is this a university library that you access? Perhaps I should use my field instructor positions to get these schools to permit my access to their systems! Hey, if I am teaching their kids, they can at least give me some access to this material!

Flexion, you should take a look at Physician and Sportsmed from 10-15 years ago...thick and full of wonderful articles. The magazine has become nothing more than a phamphlet with more than half of the pages being ads.

John:

You should look into the library thing. I can get full text access to MOST journals through my university. Issues before the mid-90s however, can be difficult to locate.

Two very interesting journals published by Springer:
Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy and Experimental Brain Research – interesting and many practical articles for us pts ( yes ,even the brain journal).
One comment about phys ther – I think the editorials are sometimes just as important as the research.

In addition to numerous ones above, one of my favorites is Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise

"Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise features original investigations, clinical studies, and comprehensive reviews on current topics in sports medicine and exercise science. With this leading multidisciplinary journal, exercise physiologists, physiatrists, physical therapists, team physicians and athletic trainers get a vital exchange of information from basic and applied science, medicine, education, and allied health fields."

Greetings all,

You might be interested in Physical Therapist's Literature Update. It covers more than 100 journals on orthopaedic medicine, distilling the clinically relevant articles from them, and offering direct links to the abstracts. In monthly issues.

If you're interested in literature, you don't wanna miss it.
