Greetings- I have a 51 year old male (PT) who sustained a cominuted intertrochanteric hip fracture with a reverse obliquity on 22 May this year--the result of a fall from his road bike to the pavement. His surgeon used a sliding nail into the femoral head, and a plate and 7 screws for the other 4 fragments. Touch weight bearing and no repetitive activites--bike, swimming, etc for the eight weeks. He is now allowed 60-80# wb, progress to 1 crutch in 2 weeks. Also will be allowed on stationary bike in 10 days-2weeks. Dr wants pt off crutches in 1 month. Anyone out there have experience with younger hip fracture patients? Any risk at this point for re-injury from the ambulation or exerices? What is potential to return to biking, hiking, backpacking? Any wonderful thoughts for rehab program at this time? (It seems like it is taking forever!) (I work in Home Health, and these patients are usually a bit older.) Thanks!
