I currently am working in Canada but I would like to experience working in the USA, specifically New York City. Are there any Canadians here working in the states? What specific requirements would I need to work in New York.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Than you,

Ted

LOL!!

We had a great Canadian Hand therapist but lost her because of sponsorship issues. You need to find a facility that will sponsor you. The market for PTs is fairly decent in NY right now. As Karim points out however, housing is nothing short of outrageous. I may have to leave someday. The city isn't made for healthcare professionals and professors. Mostly for my banker and attorney friends. Today's real estate section in the times pointed to a favorite tactic among the locals - get tons of money from mom and dad for your appartment. In this case, I believe the appartment was almost a million dollars. Chump change around here :)

When I worked in the States 10 years ago, you just needed a licence, a job offer and your degree. I stopped off at the border on the way in to the states and picked up my TN (trade NAFTA) status card for 50 dollars. At the time if your university was APTA accredited licensing wasn't a problem. I just had a temp license since I never wrote the american exam. I don't know if things have changed with the requirement for a masters degree.

Thank you for all of your helpful responses!

I realize that rent will be outrageous and my PT salary alone may not be enough. While I don't have rich parents I am fortune enough to have multiple sources of income, so I hopefully will be able to pay my rent.

Aside from housing costs how is the city to work in? Is there a shortage of PTs due to housing costs?

What are the requirements for a Canadian therapist to be able to work in New York city?

Is a Masters degree required? If it isn't required is there a posibility it will be needed in the future?

I wouldn't be moving for at least another 5 years, so I'm just starting to gather information.

Again, any information is greatly appreciated.

Thank you all,

Ted

If you TRULY wanted to work here you could make it happen. There are still many, many BS PTs floating about so I don't think the master's would be an issue. When you got here, you could consider pursuing a T-Dpt over time.
