I am just about to start schooling for my DPT, and I have a question I have not been able to find an answer to -- any info you have would be much appreciated.

Is it possible/easy/difficult for an American-trained PT to find work abroad? I would like very much to live/work in Italy, Canada, Finland, Ireland, a number of different places. When I lived in the Czech Republic there were a number of small clinics that offered English-speaking, American or English or Canadian-trained doctors and health care providers. Has anyone heard about finding work in other countries?

Thanks for your help!

J,
There are many Government PT jobs overseas, working at US military posts. They are paid at the GS11 position about $65,000 a year plus a possibility of housing pay up to an additional 20K. Currently I know of GS therapists working in Italy, Germany, Belgium. I am sure there are more. There are some great benefits for being a GS therapist, working with military soldiers, living overseas, ability to work in the same autonomous position as Army physical therapists but without being deployed to war. Good luck.

Thanks, ArmyPT. That looks interesting. Has anyone out there worked abroad in a nonmilitary job?

A friend of mine went throught the process of becoming a member of the "guild" to practice in Ireland but her plans changed and she did not end up going. Anyway she was eligible so it is easily possible to become eligible. I am not sure about the job situation overseas.
