We had a patient call with a script for physical therapy from his doctor. He stated that he had heard from an associate about us and that he wanted to schedule for an IE. He stated he was work. comp. and we took his info. We left a message with the case manager that we wanted to authorize his treatments. She called back furious, asking our front desk person how he was scheduled there, and that he is not to be seen by us because they have a contract set up with another P.T. facility and that she was going to call the patient and schedule him at that other facility and we were to immediately take him off our schedule. Is this something that is legal for the work comp companies to do or is it the choice of the patient to choose where they go for treatments? Is this a state to state regulation or a federal one? If this is not legal or allowed, who is contacted to report or control this?????

A state thing. In some states, there is patient choice ( I do believe Wisconsin and Cal) in regards to where the patient receives their PT treatments, the WC carrier can provide a list of network clinics to the patient and the patient has a choice of where he or she wants to go. In other state, like FL, it is not a patient choice state, the WC carrier can pick the facility where the patient receives the care (hence the importance of developing strong relations with the carriers, as they are important referral sources.) You may want to check with your state's position on this, by contacting the state division of WC. Please let us know if employee choice or not.....

Most WC carriers have provider networks, it is recommended that you contact this particular WC carrier and try to get on their network as an approved provider. Keep in contact with this adjuster or WC carrier, and try to develop a relationswhip with him or her (send them marketing material, offer them a visit to see your facility, offer lunch and learns etc). That way if you do not get this patient's business, you can get the next one and many more!!!

If you would like further tips on marketing to WC referral sources and developing a stronger niche in this market place, feel free to contact me directly.
