I recently heard that a common interview question is..."Why are man hole covers round?" :)
It is interesting to hear the way people try to problem solve it. Why do you think they are round? (If no one gets it immediately, I post the correct answer in a couple of days).

This would be an appropriate question for your high school geometry teacher. :)
If I had to guess, I would say that they are manufactured as 'round' manhole covers because they will not fall into the manhole! Any other geometric shape, in my opinion, would fail because they can be manipulated to fit their respective holes.
What do I get if I answered correctly? :)

Simple and short,
Because the hole is round.

And it is round because it is the best shape to prevent its fall in the hole. It is a bit larger than the hole. A squared one may fall if presented on the diagonal.
Simple, effective and more...

I am not sure but I would say because it is easier to put the cover back on. There are no sides that have to be lined up and you can just slide it over and "plops" into place.

Avalon and others are correct, it cant be rotated, tilted or otherwise manipulated to fit down the hole. The real question is why they are not called "people holes" these days. Im sure that is coming......argh.

This is an interview questions made famous by Microsoft. The company asks these questions a lot in the interviews esp for software engineer. In fact, there are websites/blogs/books published just for these questions.

Ah, but the real question is why is it actually called a "man"hole cover? Hmmm... now that would probably be because only men would want to stick something in it, boys would want to drop things into it, men would want to adventure down into it or men would potentially fall into it while at the same time cork it. LOL I'm sure there are only a few other things that would be as embarrassing as a guy stuck at about the waistline level corking a manhole. LOL

It is because there's no way to get the cover to fall in the hole. Good question SJ, why is it called a "man" hole. Probably because women have good sense to stay out of them? J

Aww Man! That´s so simple even a dutchman can answer it. A square man hole cover wouldn´t fit the round man hole!

Ever see the drill bits made into the streets when they make man hole covers? The bit is round.

like everything else it comes down to money. The cost of the heavy steel cover dictates the shape of the hole. Round holes/covers can provide access cheaper than any other shape. To minimize the amount of steel in a cover to plug a given size hole look for the best ratio of perimeter length, , to surface area of the object.......ie, look to the circle.
either that or its round to accomodate all the big fat round asses that must descend into them.

Hi!
The question should be "Why are most manhole covers boring?": US vs. Japan
