After reading an article in NY Times circuits section about an artificial leg they are working on, again I am left to wonder.......with so many advances, in so many different areas of medicine......where is PT??? It's embarassing While others are using the latest technology to make new strides, we are still trying to validate techiques that were in use 30 years ago Is anyone else disturbed by this???
I don't know what the answer is but I have one possible way to help. I think it would be better if PT researchers/faculty were drawn from a broader group of disciplines such as computer science, biomedical engineering, etc. As I have stated before, there are PTs with Tech backgrounds but I don't know of any of them who want to go through with the PhD thing (and who could blame them!). And of course, most programs will not hire faculty who aren't PTs. Even if these people aren't on faculty, they are certainly at some of these schools and may be available for colaberation.
My question to you is do you know of any situations in which cutting edge technology is being applied??

Hi mcap;
What is your tecnology mean? If it means something that very expensive like the computerised LE prosthesis,in our field we don't have one.Any way we have CPM for shoulder,elbow,hip and knee ,that look a little bit hi-tech equipments. If it means something that help the patients more comfortable and pay less,we have these technology. For prosthesis and orthosis field, they try to give the best for their clients and they have channel to build something hi-technology. In our field,even the technology was 30 years ago,if we apply it right to the patients,the results are the same ,we give the best things to our clients too. You are interesting in back pain, is " gravitional traction " considered a technology ?. If it is, not hi-tech one but it helps soneone had refered pain in one leg.
