Holy cripes. I don't know if it is just my area, but there seem to be only one realm of PT jobs around here--contract companies for nursing homes, home health, etc. There are almost no openings in my area for outpatient ortho/sports. This is surprising as this is a hot bed for sports.

Is this the direction things are moving? This was one of the reasons I didn't pursue PT as a career in the mid-late 90's when I had the chance--one look in the local paper convinced me.

I have the utmost respect for those individuals who work with the elderly in nursing facilities/LTAC's, etc. I do so in a PRN capacity (2-4 hours a week), but I could not do it day in and day out.

Is this a national trend?

I do not see that trend in my neck of the woods (Chicago suburbs)

I would agree with orthotherapist. I'm relocating from Washington DC to the northern Chicago suburbs and had plenty of opportunities in the outpatient orthopaedic setting when I was interviewing.

I am a PT owner/operater with clinics in Middletown, OH and Sarasota, FL.  I can't put my hands on a PT around here mostly because all the hospitals and nursing homes are offering such outrageous salaries.  We have a great sports medicine, exercise based practice, but no PT's to work in it...That is other than my wife and I.  Want to relocate?

The ortho/sports positions are available if you want to work for an orthopedic physician group. That's the problem in larger cities anyway and the biggest threat to private practice ortho clinics in metro areas. The OPTA is working as best as they can but with laws in our state the way they are, we're in for a big, long-term uphill battle.
