Just a generally question for all of the inquiring minds that I see post on this site. When do you guys find the time to read all of this stuff. I sit here now and type only because I had a 7:15 am pt cxl this am (I should be doing paperwork or at least paying some bills). As the father of 3 little ones, a clinic owner and husband I am having a hard time keeping up with the literature. Some of you on here seem to have the JOSPT fed through an IV! What does it take, setting the alarm for a little reading before work, one less reality show a week, weekends? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Thanks!
Rick

Well Rick,
Since I am first, I will get this one out of the way. For this advice, I need to quote a sticker that my stepson bought for his skateboard.

It reads.."Everybody Poops".

Enough said.

Incidently,
Good articles can cause transient bilateral LE paresthesias.

Good Luck

Steve

Since I take a subway and a bus to work, that is not bad reading time. Sometimes on the weekend, I will read an article or two. Certainly, while I am at work, I do not have the time at all. Reading abstracts, instead of the full article is a good way to get a handle on what is out there, if you don't have the time to read the whole article.
We also have staff meetings once a week, (not in the summmer though!) and once in a while, a relevant piece of literature will be discussed. We have to have it read before the meeting. Sort of gives you an incentive!

I think my entire library of JOSPT is next to the commode.

It helps me to guide my search and reading by centering it around particular patients that I want to have a better regimen of treatment for. So sometimes having that direction is helpful.

But you can also count me among the bathroom readers...it is a running joke my wife likes to give me a hard time about.
"You gonna be awhile?" she asks.
"I don't think so, why?" I said.
"I want to know if I have time to [insert sarcastic reference to a long and tedious activity]"

I have found forum boards and Evidence in Motion very helpful for some online studying while at work. And the JOSPT articles are full text online...

In addition to reading, I have purchased more dvd's like gary gray's functional video digest, cd roms like tim flynn's and video tapes from optp and perform better and try to watch these things either at lunch or during some downtime at home. I too also have kids age 4 and 14 who I am very happy to give most of my time to.Even with exercise I have to split my workouts into a 6am workout before getting them off to school then again another half hour during my lunch.

Just make it a priority, have a plan and folow through. Best wishes...

No fair to even mention regular exercise, I know I can work in a little reading while, um, otherwise occupied but exercise?
Thanks for the encouragement.

Steve wins this year's award for 'poop humor'! I guess I'm cut from the same mold, as most guys do read on the toilet. I have the most current JOSPT article along with SI and several of Barrett's printed-out essays right in a little basket. Exercise? I exercise on the pot as well...some knee extensions, marching, and I may even throw in some TrA in sitting, but it's kinda difficult.

I think there's something genetic here that's been overlooked. My mother raised six children and worked full time. I've never met anybody who read more, unless it was one of my five siblings.

When asked when I read all this stuff I always think: "Why not ask me when I eat? I can't see a distinction."

So, for me there's no effort involved and somehow time isn't a factor. I'm lucky to have been born this way-with an unsatisfiable hunger for reading in a world full of writing.

I read when I am on the subway and when I get home in the late evening, that is, if I am not too tired. A long weekend makes for some good reading.

Thanks for bringing that up SJ....men are definitely wired differently! Remind me not to borrow any of your books/journals, guys. :)
I read while eating, which is pretty much all the time. I read before bed, during my time off each week, and weekends. I don't have any time at work to complete a thought, much less read. As for exercise......I can't remember the last time I did that, as I'm usually to exhausted to do much of anything except sleep and go to work.
Barrett, I'm one of seven kids and the reading came from my Dad. When I was 10, I read 50+ books in one summer and won an award at school....reinforced the nerdly behavior to continue into adulthood I guess.

Indeed, when do we eat, drink, sleep and read?
Sometimes I marvel that jon has 'time' for any of these things!

I am something of a lazy reader, but my parents were prolific readers, so I'm not sure about the genetics...but I am highly selective about what I read, which helps. I gave up the Da Vinci Code after the first chapter..too boring.

Rick - what are you doing at work at 0715 hrs???

As sitting still is an anathema to me, I read on the fly - standing, sitting, lounging in totally unergonomic posturing.

Sj you are right; reading in the dunny is a male pastime..definitely.

Not necessarily. That role is clearly reversed in my house.

I live with three women (wife and two daughters) and I am NOT alone in the reading habits! However that is NOT where I read science and PT stuff - do that in between patients, at lunch or an occasional Saturday morning, after the sudoku and crossword puzzles. It NEVER interferes with my gin and tonic with my wife or my golf games (I have more than enough to contend with there!)

Come on Sarah, give us men a break. We don't wipe ourselves with the journal although sometimes I think the articles in Physical Therapy are about as helpful in my practice as toilet paper. :)

I doubt gender plays much of a role in the commodeification of knowlege acquisition.

I think Brenner made a good point. If you REALLY want to read you will read. If not, you wont. The same with exercise, oir for that matter anything.

I don't read anything not related to my area of interets unless it has something really interesting. And I feel reading in the rest room is the only place where I can focus better (:-

I think there needs to be an RCT looking at the relationship between reading for knowledge aquisition and peristalsis. Any takers?

Sorry, but I had to go there. :)
