I have always been interested in becomming a PT but never had the drive to do it. I have just enrolled in college to get my degree in Biology and go on to graduate school to get my master of PT. I stumbled across this board and now I am a little scared that I may not be making the right decision. I want to be a PT so I can help people but I need to feed my family as well. Does anyone have any suggestions on if I should move forward or another profession that is similar that is not having as many issues? Any feed back would be great!

im currently doing my 1st clinical affil w/ a group of PTs who share the same facility. Each of them are pulling in over $150k and one over $200k. There are many ways to earn money in this profession besides the typical salary based positions.

Just developing special niches, or having a good referral source. One of them is one of only two TMJ and UI certified in town. The other two see over 25 pts each MWF and on Tues and thursday they do home health visits all day. Private practice should be the future not the exception. More PTs should stop prostituting under POPTs and start working hard for their own autonomy.

I am currently in the U.S. Navy and will be retiring in about 3 1/2 years after 20 years and am seriously considering PT as my second career. My questions are is this field safe or is it as bleak as some make it out to be? Is getting the PTA degree first worth it or should I basically skip right over that and just concentrate on the prereqs for PT? Do most PT's who have a master's also have a BA? I had heard at some schools you don't require a BA to move right into to master's in PT. What is the best field to get a BA in before moving onto the master's or doctoral in PT? I know I seem to be asking alot of questions, but with 3 1/2 years left before I retire I really want to make sure I'm getting into the right field. I appreciate everyone's insight. Thanks in advance.

Navy,
Most PT schools obviously require certain prerequisites. I for one graduated with a BS in Biology/Chemistry (originally thinking of going to med school) and then subsequently got accepted to PT school and earned my MPT.

I don't think the field is bleak at all...at least IMHO. I think any field/profession has people within it that are burned out and have nothing to do except complain. Cynicism/pessimism is something that I frown upon.

With that said, I would just go for the PT degree. Most schools as of late are making the transition from the Masters to the Doctorate or MPT-->DPT degree. In regards to your Bachelors question, I'd seek a BA in Biology and possibly a minor in Psychology.

I think that your decision to possibly become a therapist is an honorable one. This field has a lot to offer and it can be very rewarding.

Good luck with your quest
