Hello all.
I've been considering a career change into physical therapy. I've done some reading up. But I'm interested to know what some of the more unpleasant aspects of the job are. What are some gross things one can expect in this line of work? Things that typically make one uncomfortable?
Hope I'm not sounding juvenile. I don't have much experience in the way of making contact with strangers on a daily basis and I'm interested to know how practionioners handle such challenges.

Mmmmh. Strong body odours, bromhydrosis ("an exquisite little inconvenience called: STINKFOOT" - F. Zappa), perfume, and in my hospital experience, loose bowels and incontinence when working with a patient.....Occasional ugly open wounds, decubitus ulcers (bedsores), tracheal suctioning in some patients, finding a shotgun suicide when doing homecare, and abusive parents of small patients.
All in all, a short list, compiled over 24 years. Only gross and uncomfortable for a short while. Many on the first part of the list are the same things you will find parenting...My mother had four sons and two daughters - she has seen it all.

IV poles/lines, oxygen tanks, hemodynamic monitoring equipment, surgical drain tubes that all get in the way when working with patients as well.

It's always unpleasant to learn and see the turmoil that unfortunate incidents have on those we treat.
It is also unpleasant to learn how those that have a role to protect those of us in society pay a price for their service.
Dotting your I's and crossing your T's is an unpleasant aspect (paperwork).
Watching the clock to know the time spent with each patient and the time spent doing each activity is a pain in the butt, unpleasant requirement.
It's always difficult working with someone with dementia because in your heart you know that person was a different person than you are now meeting and treating and the family more intricately knows how much of the person is missing.
It's always unpleasant to be sitting there hearing memories from someone physical and mentally abused and seeing first hand the damage (present or past).
In general, it is unpleasant to realize that overall, the majority in this profession are complacent. It is unpleasant to have a patient come for services after receiving services elsewhere and to have the patient describe hot packs, ultrasound and massage for way too many visits. It is unpleasant to learn that there is such variability in our professional approaches.

unpleasant in the fact that many people want you to be their psych. not just for their unjury, but in all their probs in life and it just plain drains you. you will be more emotionally tired than physically tired working in PT, even if you turn it off some.

Agree with the above. If someone asked me what they should take for a minor in college, I would definitely say psychology.
