As I have come to a minor road bump in my career, I have done some introspective thinking regarding my last 18 months at a clinic. I have come to grips with the fact that I have skills that I need to hone such as time managment, communication with co-workers, patients and management. I can try not to be so rigid with my POC's and my stances regarding what the research states will help somone and what they "know" will help them. Maybe a patient's thoughts that something will help them because they read about it or it helped their father/brother/Uncle's Sister's Mother-in-law will have a psychological effect on their recovery. That being said, I do not apologize for my thoughts regarding getting people as well as I can in the least amount of time needed. If I can restore function to a patient so they can do things they couldn't do for years, or even weeks, that is the main goal. Things I will not do: - Use all of the visits allowed by the insurance company just because they are allowed
- Base my clinical judgements upon what someone thinks will help them
- Base my clinical judgements upon financial measures
- Overtreat (ties into #3)
- Blindly follow the frequency and duration set forth by the referring physician
- Get stuck in the status quo of treatment philosophies/techniques
- Resist change
- Discount the thoughts of "the new guy" just because he is new to the clinic
Things I will continue to do - Fight for the "autonomy" of PT's and the PT career as a whole
- Be an advocate for my patients
- Treat efficiently so as to reduce the costs to the patient and healthcare system
- Push the envelope in new, proven, researched techniques so as to provide my patients with the best treatment possible
- Seek mentorship from individuals/clinicians with similar beliefs and values.
Thanks for letting me vent a little. I don't think I"m out of line, but based upon your experiences in the clinic and your learning experiences throughout your career, please inform me of anything that may be helpful or just some feedback. You can do so either here through PM/response to this thread or through email at kshearer at zoominternet . net I look forward to any responses if they transpire. BTW, I have learned a lot from this site as well as PTUpdate.com and hope to contribute more thoughtful comments to discussions rather than whining and moaning in the near future.

So.. you "learned" that stuff... meaning you are using the past tense verb. How did you part ways?
