I am a Physical Therapist in a private practice setting. I read an article which stated that the AMA has approved physicians ability to provide consultation via E-mail to patient's for a fee. I was thinking about providing a free service where the community would have ability to e-mail our therapists to ask questions they may have relating to their bodies. We would notify our local referral sources of this service to alert them to referrals we may be sending them due to questions that may require a physicians visit. I see this as an opportunity to obtain a patient for an assessment screening followed with a script from a doctor. Does anyone know of any legality or ethical issues that may need to be addressed? Thanx

KIDPT:
This is an interesting and timely topic!
I will just tell you this.....the person whom you need to be asking these questions is an attorney......not a PT. I have a fairly large web site that gets a lot of traffic. In my discussion group, I often get asked about personal cases. I never answer them specifically however. And...my site is heavily disclaimered.
As far as I am concerned....when you give someone advice specific to their problem, then you are "treating" them and are therefore subject to the same liability. Furthermore, you have rendered treatment without an evaluation.
If you look at the various medical sites....almost none answer questions directly. There are liability concerns and it can be a pandora's box in terms of time and resources.
I do think your impulse is a good one however. I would suggest an informational website. You could write related articles and use those to draw people in for the screenings. Answering questions directly.....before the screening......should be something you think about carefully though.
Good luck....and remember......if you build it, they may not come. Driving traffic to your site is difficult!!!!!

I agree with Mcap, the risk is not worth it in and of itself. Speaking in general terms with a personal voice may have value to the patient, but no business advantage to you.
In short, it's not worth the risk unless you have a business plan that includes selling products or services through your site.
With the emergence of tele-medicine, however, you may be able to conduct, and bill for, follow-up treatment via broad-band video teleconf. Jury's still out on that.
