I think we all agree that the study is flawed since it looked at non-specific LBP and lumped them all into one group.  However, these people had chronic LBP.  They responded well to vitamin D which is linked to lack of sunlight.  Lack of sunlight and chronic LBP are both linked to depression.  So the question is whether the vitamin D helped with their LBP or simply helped their depression which resulted in less perceived pain.

An interesting study. Let see if they see the same results with those with LBP categorized into groups.
