I have been unable to check on the safe use of heat with infants. I remember reading that there was a corrolation between "altered temperature regulation systems" and the incidence of SIDS. This may still be theory but I am reluctant to incorporate the use of heat with a three month old I am treating for torticollis. I believe he would benefit from the heat and tolerate static stretch of his left lateral neck flexors better but I need more information about any contraindications. I am treating him "at home" so I am thinking of over the counter heating gel packs if appropriate. We are getting good return of cervical rotation and reasonably good neck extension with exercise, but he has limited tolerance of positoning for elongation or traditional stretching of his tight left- lateral- neck -flexors. He tolerates stretching better when his neck is stabilized and his body moved upward but this is not always efficient.I am getting some nice relaxation of his upper trapezious using a slightly deflated PT ball to support a positon of max. stretch and then incorporating the use of a gentle vibrator along the paravertebral area. Any help regarding the use of heat would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You-Sally

What I have found to be useful is a warm washcloth... I ask the parents to place it on the child's neck about 10 minutes before I arrive, to help relax their muscles. I would try that over an over the counter hot pack. Good luck

Ditto what Dana said--the wash cloth was the ticket with several of the infants I've treated, including a 3 wk old with in utero torticollis.
