Forum,
Just wondering. Happened to filp channels and noted that the Bachlorette in the new reality TV show, is a physical therapist (apparently a pediatric PT, as she was all decked out in lab coat, Swiss therapy balls, and children). I'm just curious as to how listserv members think that whole thing reflects upon the profession, and our specialization in particular. Positively? Negatively? What do ya'll think?
I've got my own opinions, but want to hear what others think first.

Interesting...last nights Seinfeld also dealt with a physical therapist. When George asked about some forearm swelling, she suggested heat and ice. Makes us sound like real scientists, doesn't it?! At least they portrayed the typical arrogant PT attitude correctly....the writers must have some experience with PT's!
I also recieved my new APTA 2003 catalog yesterday, and immediately tossed it into the trash when I reached page 37. There was the booklet to give to MD's and the public called "Take a Look at Today's Physical Therapist". As usual, it was complete with the mandatory image of the smiling PT working with some old woman (also smiling!), along with the mandatory PT gently rolling someone on a mat, etc.
This is the crap the public sees and identifies us with. How unfortunate that our true capabilities rarely get portrayed.

We have three women PTs at our clinic...of varying stature. A fellow commented he would choose his therapist on percieved strength..the bigger the better...after all how effective could they be if they were small?

Duff I hear you and the APTA should wake up and realize what they are doing there. I feel like that type of marketing is pretty slack when we interface it with the push to DPT status that the APTA wants. In my opinion, PTs like you and I, the regulars here and those who strive to reach higher are in the minority in the ranks of the practicing. We know that membership numbers continue to be poor. By the way, did anyone else get an invitation (for 5,000 dollars) to join Ben Massey and the group on a cultural exchange to China? I'd rather have then here working on the domestic issues... Chip
