Hi there, this is a first posting for me. I have just started my home physiotherapy practice and I have a patient who has tension headaches. What are some common causes and treatment options. Any references to web sites?

I get tension headaches myself... what I do is put two tennis balls in a tied sock.. and lay on the floor with them right under my occiput... it gives me a sort of release and helps with the tension in my upper traps.. It gives some relief.. but???
I prefer to just take a nap
If i knew a cure, I'd be a lot happier myself! interested in hearing about this!

Lotsa info out there on headaches... Here are some sites to try: www.nlm.nih.gov.medlineplus www.ahsnet.org (American Headache Society) www.achenet.org www.i-h-s.org You can also use tension headache for key words in your search, but, as always, be a critical reader of everything, especially info over the net. And "Pain" sites will also provide links and info...American Pain Society, International Association for the Study of Pain, etc. That said... There are different categories and causes of headache and treatment will depend on the cause. If it's a true tension type headache treating the muscles at fault should help: Soft tissue techniques, posture education, stretching, relaxation training. Often there is an underlying joint dysfunction in the cervical spine that will need to be addressed. I found helpful Manual Therapy for Chronic Headache by Joy Edeling. And for general guidelines on headache management Handbook of Headache Management by J. Saper, et. al. There are plenty more books. Your evaluation of the cervical spine should assist you in planning your treatment. Personally, I find soft tissue and appropriate joint mobilization, muscle reeducation with specific attention to relaxation, and posture education useful treatments. Good luck. Betty
