Hi all. I conducted a case series entitled "Direct Access Physical Therapy for Soldiers with Acute Musculoskeletal Injuries" and am submitting it for publication. I wanted to submit it to a journal that would be well read by both physicians and physical therapists. The first journal that came to my mind was American Journal of Sports Medicine but they felt that it was not appropriate for their forum and rejected it.
Does anyone have a good idea of a target journal for this manuscript that is well read by both physicians and PTs?

What about JAMA and/or NE Journal of Medicine?

Hmmm, there was one article called: Risk determination for patients with direct access to physical therapy in military health care facilities. J Orthop Sports Phys Ther. 2005 Oct;35(10):674-8. PMID: 16294989 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE]
Maybe JOSPT is an option.

Alex, There are only three PTs out of one hundred and twenty four persons, the rest mostly MDs on the board of the AJSM. Your case series is perhaps extolling the virtues of patient direct access and even if it is coming from the military it might be a bit much to expect your paper to be published. Where would it all lead? My goodness it might give the impression that they would actually condone patients self referral to physical therapists. Jim McGregor PS Anyone want a book on "Medical Writing. The Technique and the Art". Email me with your address. Introduction begins,"The quality of contributions to medical literature is constantly improving. Far too often however, physicians still prepare their contributions with a striving and agony and delay comparable to the delivery of human progeny by one untutored in the refinements of obstetrics.

Alex -
Only two other journals really spring to mind:
Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (doubtful for the medical/political reasons that Jim alluded to). Most articles are surgical, but a few are related to rehab.
Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is the best fit that I can think of - it has a good mix of medical and physical therapy-directed articles, and hopefully wouldn't have the same issues as the journals already mentioned.

I doubt that NEJM would take a case series. It doesn't sound like something JBJS would be interested in either. I could be wrong. Archives may be a better fit. You might try something like clinical journal of sport medicine.

Alex: Are there any particular body regions this article will cover? If for example just knee, Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology & Arthroscopy may be a good option. If back related, Spine journal does a wonderful job of integrating PT and MD. JBJS is an option, and Archives of Physical Medicine & Rehab is probably the best overall option

I think the best journal you could target would be archives. There are plenty of other rehabilitation journals though.

Hi Alex,
Maybe with the right twist you could vie for more influential eyes
Journal of Health Politics, Policy and Law
otherwise consider JAMA, BMJ or Annals of Int. Med.
Good luck.
