I am wondering about the function of the TA and scar tissue after c-section. Does a woman have the ability to regain full function (function before surgery) or will there always be a limitation no matter the conditioning performed. I'm assuming it would depend on the number of c-sections performed/amount of scar tissue.
I am a personal trainer so knowing if I should refer out first for manual therapy etc.... would this be more effective.
Also, if there is back pain how much does this inhibit the TA. If someone is regaining "core" strength or if there has been an injury due to an accident (back) would this inhibit the TA more then if someone was just beginning to recruit these fibers in a conditioning program.
Hope this made sense..lol. Thanks for any help.
Rhonda C.

Hi Rhonda.

There have been a few research papers on TA activation before/after insult - be it back pain or surgery. I'm not aware of one specifically after C-section.
Richardson et al proved that the TA was inhibited in folks with back pain, to what degree depended on the person.

As far as referring - I think as a trainer you would do well to focus on core conditioning for your postpartum clients. Referral to a medical source such as a medical doctor or physical therapist would be indicated in the presence of pain, as i'm sure your certifying organization indicates.
Hope that helps.

Hey Jason,
Thanks so much for the reply. Ya, core conditioning obviously is the big thing post partum, for me I was really curious if I would be better off to refer out first if there was scar tissue or just keep working with them myself. I don't know research on this topic other then Paul Chek info & was hoping to get additional information. I really appreciate your reply.

No problem, Rhonda.

I don't think the mere presence of "scar tissue" is enough to refer. Anyone who's had a C section will have that, most of the time it resolves on it's own. Certainly if she is in pain, unable to progress with the program, or you/she have concerns, then a visit to the therapist might help. However, I think a slow progressive core conditioning program with a good trainer like yourself is more than enough for most people after that sort of operation.
Good luck
J

Right on. Thanks so much. It's been hard getting information regarding this topic. I've posted on several other sites and this is the first response I've had regarding it. Thanks again!
