1. The information that I've read regarding Synvisc says that before each shot is administered, synovial fluid needs to be removed from the knee. Is there any valid reason why this would NOT be done for 3 consecutive shots...even when the patient experiences debilitating pain for weeks after each one? 2. After arthroscopic surgery for partial synovectomy and minor meniscus repair, how much time should pass before the Synvisc series begins? Thank you for your input.

I just opened my November 2007 issue of AAOS, which has a supplement regarding all these products. If I get chance to read over next day or two, will post what I find

I talked to a pharmacist who works for Genzyne Corp. (Synvisc manufacturer) and got my answers. In case you want to know: Genzyne Corp. recommends some synovial fluid to be removed as to not dilute the Hylan Acid's effectiveness but allows room for each physician to make the call. Synvisc has NO data to form a conclusion as to how soon following surgery the injections should start. I suspect other studies have been done independent of Genzyne, but I have not found them. Hope that helps anyone in the "wonder."
