Hi, has anyone had any patients who have received Synvisc injections as medical treatment for OA of the knee, if so, what sort of results did you see? Anecdotal reports are welcome. For more info read:Synvisc About Synvisc
These articles support its efficacy: Clin Rheumatol. 2004 Dec 14

Hi Eric,

I've had mixed reports from synvisc use. A large number of patients with total knee replacements first went through synvisc injections. Thus it was a success if delaying surgery was the goal. Or it was a failure if preventing surgery was the goal. I think the former is what is suggested to the patient as an expectation.

I know one younger fellow (40's) who has had at least two series of injections, so apparently for him, the first was satisfying enough to get the second despite the first not enduring. Although he was also willing to go at least 5 surgeries (it may be 8 actually) for this knee also.

Here's one more reference to consider.

Thanks Jon, I had a patient in his mid-thirties ask me what I knew about it, but I had never heard of it before now.

Correction.

He has had a total of 12 of the shots. The last one did result in a swelling that did not resolve within 24 hours as the others had. It took about 72 hours. He typically bikes the following day after the injection for up to 2 hours. He states it costs approximately $1500 per series of shots. One series is 3 shots, each one week apart.

There is a risk of developing a sensitivity to the synvisc injection after repeated exposures.

He recommends it as a prohphylactic to slow the rate of cartilage degeneration similar to those using glucosamine chondoitin, which he also uses. As it pertains to pain, there is not a big effect. The benefit seems to be a decreased felt sense of grinding and friction. He's states, "I'm willing to be part of a study for pay." :)

As an aside, he has also employed behavior changes to deal with this chronic condition. He no longer runs or perform other aeorbic sports that seem to predictably irritate his knee. He does bike and use an elliptical trainer for up to 2+ hours.

I won't mention his experience with PT as it pertains to his knee pain.
