What has been the usual weightbearing status for a superior rami fracture? We have always done WBAT if it is only a single rami. We had a DR. admit an 88 y/o female yesterday with a superior rami fracture and received orders for WBAT. She did great. Walked 15 feet with a walker and complained of very minimal discomfort. She was admitted by one Dr., but the follow up care is being performed by another Dr. He wrote orders today to DC PT and put the patient on bedrest for 2-3 weeks. The fracture is non-displaced!! What do you guys think?

You have the expertise to question these orders. 2-3 wk bedrest sounds totally inappropriate.(Unless there were new findings on the radiology report) Question the physician or ask the patient/family to question the physician reguarding this dramatic change in treatment. Cite the negatives of bedrest for an 88yo-- pneunomia risk, atrophy, decreased stimulation of bone formation, decline in function....... Involve the other physician or the hospital patient advocate if necessary, this could have a profound negative effect of this patients life unless medically necessary.
