I am in the market for a new laptop, I do a lot of community lectures and need one that is good with power point, has good easy (maybe wireless) connectivity to the internet and will work well with a viewsonic projector, All of my other systems run on windows so I can't see myself going the Mac route. My 333mhz Gateway is just not cutting it anymore. Any suggestions?
Thanks, Rick

A lot, if not all, of the MD's who present lectures at the hospital I work at use Dell Laptops. Powerpoint presentations are getting more graphic and using more media at the same time. This kind of usage is a bit much for a 333 mhz laptop.

Dell for sure, I have two of them, both have been terrific and reliable, I do lots of power points.

I disagree with Dell. I had one. Ended up sending it back after they switched several motherboards and even replaced the entire laptop. Neither of which solved the problem. A friend of mine had a lot of trouble with them when his laptop needed a new motherboard. Dell tends to be cheaper than other brands but their build quality isn't very good. IBMs have great build quality but they are quite expensive. My last laptop was an IBM. It is still working well five years later and still does powerpoint well. IBMs laptop division was bought out by Lenovo. I'm not sure if they've changed much. I need something that can do matlab and image processing well so I recently bought an Asus Z71V.

I think that any laptop you buy now should meet the demands you've stated. Built in wireless comes with most laptops at least in the price range I was looking at.
You really need to decide how much you want to pay and exactly what you want to use it for. If it is just for playing powerpoint presentations, I would probably pick something small with a pentium m processor. Integrated graphics is probably good enough (although I usually wouldn't recommend it) unless you want to do anything in 3D such as games. If you actually want to use the laptop as a desktop as well I'd go with a 14-15.4" screen.

I have a tablet PC - a Compaq TC 1100. It's great in the clinic and it does great wirelessly. I have a major problem with its function when I use it for a powerpoint presentation when I have to connect it to a projector. I've been on the phone a few hours with HP and the problem still isn't resolved. There's like a glitch or something between the projector and the tablet (unpredictably so) such that the image disappears and "no input device" or something like that pops up on the screen in the middle of presenting (while my internal screen is showing the presentation just fine). Sometimes I can get the it to work with the projector okay, sometimes I can never get it to know that there really is an input device present.
When I've had to do do presentations, I've used my husband's Toshiba. Never had a problem with his company's notebook.

I have heard of scenarios like this. What did HP tell you what they think the problem is? Thanks.

Rick I don't have any references along laptop recommendations but i thought this was an interesting entry at Creating Passionate Users
I haven't seen any of your presentations so don't take this post as something you need to do. I just thought it might be of interest, in general, to anyone doing a lot of presenting.

jma... "driver problem" He had me snag something off the internet and he walked me through the process. Couldn't have been a "driver problem," the issue wasn't resolved. I still need to call them to get it resolved, but I hate calling their techs - they have thick accents and it is frustrating to be on the phone for 2-3 hours without a resolution of the problem. I even told the guy that it made no sense that it was a driver problem because I can get the dumb thing to work, it's just that it cuts out at it's own whim and says "no input device" - if it were a driver problem, it would never work in the first place.
I really like my tablet except for that problem - but for what it cost, I shouldn't be having any problems using it for presentations.

Hmmm. This is interesting. I'm thinking about getting a laptop along with a projector in the future. Will definitely bring a powerpoint presentation with graphics and test it out before I buy one. Don't want the same scenario you have.

Thanks to all, I have heard the same problems with Dell, but also many good things, all of my desktops are now Dell and very few problems have been fixed quickly. jon, great link, really made me think, the next presentation is to a group of 50 or so post polio pts and/ or their spouses, maybe I'll just talk and listen, answer questions, thanks as always.

I also use a Dell laptop and have several movie clips of patient care in an ICU power point presentation (over 50,000 KB). It has been very reliable...no problems.
The only thing about running movie clips in presentations is that the projectors can't play them when the laptop display is on. You have to hit function/F8 to turn off the LCD, then it plays fine over the projector. I doubt this is something that is specific to Dell.
I have not had any problems with wireless connections.

Tucker if you switch the primary monitor to the projector your video should display on the projector while keeping the lcd running. I think that my ASus does that automatically. Both my IBM and Asus have resolutions greater than most projectors. On the old IBM I have to switch the resolution manually while the Asus does it automatically. On the Asus I can also display the presentation on the projector while keeping my desktop on the lcd screen. Not sure if integrated video can do that.
Keynote for the apple has a neat feature where the presentation shows on the projector while the lcd screen shows the current slide and the next slide in your talk.
SJ, driver problems can do funny things. I'd try changing the video resolution on your laptop to one supported by the projector and see if that helps. Also try turning off the output to the lcd. It almost sounds like a loose connection though. Maybe a faulty motherboard. YOu know that some of these companies outsource their support lines to India? I guess the long distance charges are made up for with cheaper labour and overhead.

LOL Doug... that's why I hate calling tech support and being on the line for 2 hours. Lots of "what did you say?" Every time I've called on that darn tablet I've had to speak to someone in India. I can't understand their accent. I did whatever driver download and did everything the tech told me and it still didn't work. It acts like a loose connection, but it isn't. I can use the same line between the toshiba and the projector and no problems. I've played with the internal monitor and the external monitor - no change with that. I haven't played with the video resolution - I could try that.
One of the sales reps for Medtronic that I know said that quite a few of his colleagues had problems with video clips within powerpoint and that caused presentation problems. He made it sound like that was a powerpoint software kind of problem and not the computer or projector problem. I don't have video clips in mine, so I don't think that is the variable with mine.

I have one other idea SJ. Download a linux live cd such as ubuntu www.ubuntu.com or knoppix www.knoppix.org burn it to a cd and boot with that cd. It should automatically detect your hardware (the tablet has a keyboard right?). Use openoffice impress to make or open a powerpoint presentation. If you still get the same problem then its a hardware problem. You can then tell tech support that and they should fix it (probably replace the motherboard).
