Can anyone describe to me a "steamboat" exercise. It is listed on an ACL protocol at the 6-7 week mark. It says it is closed chain with theraband and progress slow to fast. Thanks! Tonya

I hate it when we use those silly names for exercises (sorry rant is over). The steamboat is basically resisted walking with either a weighted pulley system or theraband. Variations I have seen are with sidestepping, high knee stepping, backwards stepping etc... On my flowsheets I'll write or type resisted walking with pully vs steamboat. Hope that helps.

Tonya, There are various derivations of the exercise, and the one I use mainly isolates the gluteus medius. I have the patient stand on their INVOLVED leg, holding onto something for balance, and a double looped theraband hooked around their NON-involved ankle. They then proceed to abduct and slightly extend and abduct the non involved limb with a degree of ER as well. If the patient really focuses on stabilizing themselves, they will feel a surprising burn in their involved gluteus. I also repeat the other way, now making it open chain, just to maximize the effect. This can also be done with hip extension, adduction, flexion, or diagonal patterns

ruralPT - You can also have variations on the steamboat exercise. PTupdate's description to work all three planes is great. Other variations - minimize or remove hand hold; speed of movement; remove elastic resistance with same leg movement but stand on unstable surface; stand on slanted surface; etc. It is also possible to use UEs with the elastic and stand on the involved leg.
