Does anyone know if a physical therapist with a sports certification can legally supervise a athletic training student. If they can, can the student count the hours towards state certification hours or not.

Hello, According to the PT practice guide from what I remember reading, PT's can only supervise PT or PTA students and no one else. There is no mention of athletic training students.

Hello SJBird5, Can you please tell me where you found the information that states that NATA allows PT's to supervise athletic training students. Couldn't really find it at celw.com, unless I was looking at the wrong link. Thank you for your response

Hello again, I went to the cewl.com site and asked the question there and this was their response:
"I will copy this response to the NATABOC for their feedback, but from an accredited program standpoint, only ATCs can supervise athletic training students. However, PTs and other health and medical professionals can instruct and evaluate specific aspects of the student's learning".
Hmmmm. There seems to be a difference here. Comments on this?

Hello Everyone
The original question asked if a PT with a sports certification could perform the supervision. If they mean the SCS designation, then the PT may have the necessary skills indicated by SJbird. I have recently inquired in the SCS certification, and it appears that the APTA desires this to be the equivalent of the ATC (at least that is what the current SCS PT's indicate to me)
