Foam roller release is becoming more common in fitness settings. I use them, and have my clients use them as well. I'm looking for some input as to what degree and capacity you feel they are effective. Myself and my clients certainly "feel" better after using them in certain areas "trigger points". I'm wondering though, if there are any studies that have confirmed any appreciable therapeutic benefit. The claims are;
- Correct muscular imbalance - Increase joint ROM - Decrease muscular soreness - Decrease hypertonicity - Extensibility of musculotendonous junction - Increased neuromuscular efficiency - Relief of joint stress - Maintain normal muscular length
Through studies/research or your own clinical experience, is there any validity to the aforementioned claims? Obviously there are exaggerated claims for these (and the release balls) from the manufacturers, but I'm wondering if there is anything beyond a "feel good" effect.
Thank you.

I don't think there is any benefit to that technique other than "feel good" in an asymptomatic person. But I know a lot of fitness and massage people just love to use "medical" words and like to describe their techniques as if they are medical treatment, hence the "myofascial" term really caught on. I think your critical thinking skills seem too sharp to fall into the same trap above as many others, hence your very appropriate question.
I have had some luck with some pain patients in teaching some self-treatments, but in looking over the list of purported benefits, I don't see how rolling over a foam piece can do some of that. I think improving extensibility and decreasing muscle soreness seem reasonable, though... J

Thanks for the response, Jason. Yeah, fancy buzzwords are very good marketing techniques used to peddle certain things. It irks me a bit when people imply that it is a feasible replacement for professional treatment to address an often complex cause of pain. Hence, although I do use it with clients who feel "relief" from it, I would not falsely represent what it does (or does not do), nor would I suggest that they use it in place of a competent practitioner
Small ball myofascial therapy helps the body return to balance by letting go of unproductive patterns. By following the logic of the neuromuscular system, we can remove physical restrictions that hold us back from living fully through our bodies. Energy will be allowed to flow throughout the body using various self-applied techniques with the ball.
Small ball myofascial therapy Sounds like another alternative therapy that uses a lot of fancy words (energy flow, etc.) that really doesn't describe the treatment with real substance. At least in my narrow, limited dimension, low Chi mind.
Sitting on my couch drinking a beer, eating chips, and watching football "feels good" too. Probably not therapeutic though.
