Hello~
In working towards the prereq's for a MPT, the school I was looking into moved to the DPT. Now my 'prereq' is a 4 year degree. I've completed my core, but need to select a major. I've looked at the Recreational Therapist degree, and the sports med department which has ex. physiology, athletic trainer, and health/fitness degree programs. I'm having trouble getting info on which would best suite my goal of getting a DPT - each department say's the other would be better. Could any of those with experience in any of these fields offer some advice on which would be most useful? Thanks in advance for your time and wisdom.

It really depends on your professional goals. If you want to work in a sports medicine setting, I would highly recommend an athletic training major. The combination of ATC/DPT makes you extremely marketable. You could also look at which major enables you to complete the most pre-reqs without requireing classes outside of your major. I went to a small private college, in which I majored in athletic training. Combined with the gen-ed requirements and my AT courses I fulfilled all the requirements.

I would much rather hire or work with an ATC/PT than anything else. From an acuity stand point, ATC's are hard to beat (better than PT's), so if you combine the acute care of ATC's and the rehab knowledge of a PT then you are VERY marketable.
