The future of PT is being challanged by insurance companies that do not pay for services done by students during their clinicals. The fact that there is direct supervision does not matter. Medicaid, Medicare B and now Medica do not pay for treatments done by students in any setting. This makes rural facilities, such as ours, think long and hard about the financial impact of allowing clinical affiliations with schools to continue. The schools need to take a more proactive role with the association and insurance companies. Also the lack of visible concern by the APTA in these areas may help explain why membership is weak.

I agree, this is a problem. Wonder if this has been brought to the table at the APTA for discussion. Haven't heard of anything thus far.

Are there any other facilities experiencing this type of billing restrictions for students during their clinicals?
