I am currently finishing up my prerequisites for a DPT program to which I have already been accepted (Shenandoah U.). One of my current classes requires me to do a feasibility study pretaining to my major. I chose to study the Feldenkrais Method and its application in the rehabilitation of stroke patients. Basically, I am looking for pros and cons of using this method. How this method is implemented. Is this method popular, suggested, and sucessful? Exactly what does the implementation of this method include in the rehabilitation process of stroke patients? If there are any PT's, OT's, or any rehab staff that has input on this topic, any input would greatly be appreciated. Please share your wisdom and experience with a learning student!

"In a perfectly matured body which has grown without great emotional disturbances, movements tend gradually to conform to the mechanical requirements of the surrounding world. The nervous system has evolved under the influence of these laws and is fitted to them. However, in our society we do, by the promise of great reward or intense punishment, so distort the even development of the system, that many acts become excluded or restricted. The result is that we have to provide special conditions for furthering adult maturation of many arrested functions. The majority of people have to be taught not only the special movements of our repertoire, but also to reform patterns of motions and attitudes that should never have been excluded or neglected." I've never seen it used in a stroke clinic. My general impression is it is a form of micromanaged control/feedback method of training in which a therapist facilitator assists the client in attempting to gain specific control (motor control/sensory sensitization) of parts of the body you might not ordinarily tend to gain control of. More investigation into this method I think is useful because the method is a bit obscure but likely a valid based on its theoretical premise. You might go to a seminar -- they are reasonably priced compared to many of the other more fantastical seminar outings.
