I recently evaluated a patient presenting with right upper extremity pain, weakness, and parasthesias s/p open heart surgery. The patient intially presented with a non-specific brachial plexus injury and potential thoracic outlet syndrome. Follwing NCV studies the patient was provided the diagnosis of Parsonage-Turner Sydrome or brachial plexus neuritis. Neurological examination revealed involvement of root levels C6 to T1. Motor involvement was noted throughout all root levels, however most notably in C6/7, and C8/T1. Parasthesias were noted throughout the C8 and T1 dermatomes. In addition, special tests for thoracic outlet syndrome were found to be positive.
I would appreciate any insight into this pathology, course of recovery, and physical therapy treatment options.
Thanks, tgrim
