Hello All,
I'm currently an exercise science student rapidly approaching grad school. I have looked into the various accredited PT progarms (DPT and MS) in and around NYC from The APTA, and I have formulated some pretty good ideas about where I would like to go, but, I would like to hear if anyone knows, or feels, one is better than another. Right now I'm leaning towards Columbia, or perhaps NYU,(pretty lofty goals) but SUNY downstate is also an option. Which program would hold the most esteem, or if not esteem, which one is just better?
All thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Also, I'm starting to look into the volunteering aspect of the application process, so if anyone knows of any exciting, or interesting, volunteering oppurtunities in and around NYC, I'm all ears.

All the PT programs in NY are great. How so? Many of the people I work with graduated from PT programs all around the NY area.
As far as volunteering, a good place to go to is Mt. Sinai. There are a lot of different areas to look into in one setting, including outpatient, acute, rehab, spinal cord, TBI, cardio, neuro, all on different floors.

If you are available during day time, most of the hospitals in the area have rehab departments are available for volunteering....

. Personally,if you apply and get into all of them, I would suggest going to the PT program that costs the least money to keep yourself out of debt. I'm not sure what others think but I don't really think it matters which PT program is the most prestigious with regards to getting a job. I'm pretty sure you will like and not like some of things at whichever program you wind up in. It's an awesome profession and I still love it after almost 10 years!
As for volunteering, what is your interest? I would suggest volunteering at lots of different venues so you can get a taste of everything. When I started school, I thought I was going to be an ortho PT. I did it for a bit but my specialty now is pediatrics!

Thanks for the info, it is greatly appreciated.
As for my interests, I would love to explore physical therapy for the obese. I say that not even knowing where even to find any info on that subject, but I feel as someone who spent most of his adult life as an obese person, I realize the decreased mobility and wear and tear that comes with carrying lots of extra weight. I don't, however, even know where to begin to find something like that.

Hello,
There is a fantastic article in the March 2005 of the PT Magazine Volume 13 No 3. In fact, the article is called, "Raising the Bar in Bariatric Care".
In terms of a definition, bariatrics, "is the branch of medicine that deals with the causes, prevention, and treatment of obesity."
Go to the PT Magazine website at:
http://apta.org/PTmagazine/Current_Issue and you can access the article. I also strongly recommend going a website posted in the article there at http://www.bariatricrehab.com
It is interesting to note that there is a few facilities, including one in the Bronx, NY, listed on that particular webpage, that helps individuals who are obese. Check it out.

Go to the cheapest school. Does Hunter College in NYC still have a program?
