Is there any precedent of physical therapists parterning with ortho docs per hospital based outpatient clinic. I am not talking about strictly physican owned, this is a equal partnership. Would like some specific info on states were this is happening.

I doubt you will find it. The earning potential is VASTLY different between the two. I do not believe it makes any sense for any orthopedic surgeon to "partner" with a PT. It's an unequal partnership, with the surgeon providing most of the revenue and taking on the lion's share of adminstrative costs and medical liability concerns. It would seem, on the face of it, very unfair to the surgeon, monetarily. J

The thing to do is get a couple of P.T.'s to partner up and purchase a building and build it out as a medical center, medical plex, etc.. and lease out space to physicians, MRI groups, etc.. You can even look into local investors to help!!

I would agree that there would be little benefit for the MD to do a 1:1 partnership --- but that's not the model that has worked with other non-medical clinical doctors (e.g. OD's, DDS, DPM) partnering with MD's.
In Baltimore, MD, a group of OD's massed and got tired of being treated like second-class citizens by the opthamologists that they referred to --- the latter of which would provide the patient glasses in THEIR optical shops.
The group of OD's massed to about 90 or so, and they they hired their own MD, who they referred exclusively to. There are of course, many legal loopholes to jump through, but there would be precident for a group of (D)PT's with direct-access and the ability to screen for medical conditions, hire a younng, up-and comming ortho-MD, to do all of the surgeries for which the (D)PT's generated referral. I think the company's name is OmniHealth.

Many states do not allow non-MD/DO/DC to own a MD/DO/DC clinic. For instance, in PA, I do not think a PT could be an owning partner in such a clinic.

Buddy- that's a rather interesting partition there: MD/DO/DC. I find two that rather naturally belong together, but one that has less in common with the other two than PT (or DDS or OD or DPM) has.
Remember that song from children's television? "One of these things is not like the other, one of these things is not the same..." :)
What a strange law.... J

First of all, I think this is just one step up from a POP and should not be something we pursue. Secondly, the Stark laws prohibit us from owning a PT practice as partners with a physician (not sure how this is illegal, but them owning one isn't, however, we can manage the clinic for them, and work an arrangement that becomes basically a 50/50 thing. There are quite a few of these around me, and they are becoming more popular as Dr's don't have to worry about running the clinic, just collecting the $$$.

Buddy is right, most states don't allow non-similar professionals or non-professionals to own such clinics. Seems like PT may be the only exception(non-PT can own a PT clinic).

Sorry, Jason, I just saw your reply. Only 5 months late...
I think the laws probably have something to do with scope of practice and how a non-physician owner might negatively influence the employee physicians in a way that would not hold up to the standard of care.
Not sure how this applies to other professionals, but I do know that in my state, a DC must own a DC clinic. Same with and MD. Not sure about PTs.

The primary problem is that PT's are not legally permitted to form professional associations(PA's), nor limited limited liability corportations (PLLC's). As such, a PT cannot form a legal partnership with an MD, DO, DC, PsyD, PharmD, OD, etc., etc., etc.
