I am looking for some input regarding the ownership of private clinics. I am a Canadian PT and there are some potential changes to ownership where I work. In Canada each province has it's own College of Physiotherapists. Presently it is stated in our Act that a clinic must be 100% PT owned. The proposed change is to be %75 PT owned. This will allow non-PT's to become part owners of clinics. I see potential ethical problems with this decision.

Have others dealt with anything similar? I would really appreciate others thoughts and potential references on this topic.

Sincerely,

Rob

I live in AB and PT clinics must be 75% PT owned. I am not aware of any major conflicts of interest. If a Physicain owns 25% of the clinic he/she may be more likely to refer to their clinic, but referal bias will always be there anyway.

That being said, what is the rational for making the change? I can't see how it will benefit the profession.

Rob, Why would any one want to change 100% ownership? Does this mean at present a PT can't work for anyone except a PT excluding hospitals?
The only non PT ownership that I know of in BC is by corporations such as CBI.

I will look into this tommorrow in the PM Rob. I have concerns about this as well as I think Ontario has some negative experiences with this.

Lacks common sense if you ask me.

I e-mailed Bahrm Jam about this as well and he stated that in Ontario there is a 51% PT ownership. He said that presently half of the clinics in Ontario are non-PT owned and this as led to many problems. His words were "corruption". He stated that there have been many complaints made against these clinics to the college but nothing can be done since their non-PT's!

He went on to say that he admires NB for having 100% ownership and that we should do everything to keep this clause. He can't see any resaon why it should be reduced to 75%. This will only lead to the problems other provinces are currently facing.

Let me know if you find out any more info.

Rob

My clinic is 100% PT owned (by me). :)
I wonder who is lobbying PT colleges in various provinces to relax the 100% rule and why. I smell a rat.

In work in Ontario in a non-PT owned clinic, but the clinic is in a health club and not owned by an MD. I feel MD's should not be able to own clinics, due to referral for profit issues.

I think the only way to solve this problem in Ontario, is for PT's to ban together and not work for these MD's.

Rob,

I looked into this issue further and I am now more than certain that it is crucial to alert all PT's about the potential problems with this change.

dfjpt, I too smell a rat.

Read the post. He said it would drop from 100 to 75. If Ontario is 51 then he obviously wasn't talking about Ontario. Hence my comment.

ONstudentPT555:

Presently PT ownership is 51% in Ontario and as far as I know will remain the same. It is in New Brunswick where there is a proposal to reduce from 100% PT ownership to 75%.

My impression is that there are PT owners with influence in the NB College that will benefit from this rule change. My concern is that it opens the flood gates for many ethical problems that other provicnes are currently facing. If we have the 100% clause then it only makes sense to keep it. Once it's reduced you can't go back.

The college will be contacting me next week to discuss my concerns further. I would like to know what others think are the main problems with this change so that I am properly prepared.

Thanks,

Rob

Well in that case .. Ontario's 51% PT ownership is pretty unequal to the rest of the country .. why hasnt this been contested.. this seems pretty unfair compared to the other provinces. What is opa and the the Ontario college doing about this... I spoke to the head of the ontario college a few weeks ago who is an OT and she doesnt seem to be adressing many important issues(Eg protecting the term physiotherapy, physican owned clinics..ect)..it doesnt seem like the publics or the professions best interests are priority... maybe there needs to be some changes.

Well, for starters, an OT? Not that I have anything against OTs.. just seems weird she'd be at the helm of a provincial college of a whole other profession.

Next, this whole issue of PT clinic ownership not being PTs, where is this stemming from? Who stands to gain by putting PTs into chains? I had no idea there was anything like this going on. It sounds awfully funny. Funny-weird, not funny-haha. What kind of wool is being pulled over who's eyes and how much, how far? This 51% rule is very disturbing.

I have a correction to make regarding the ownership of PT clinics in Ontario. I had stated that it must be 51% PT owned. In fact there is NO RULE! From my understanding a PT clinic in Ontario can be 100% non-PT owned! How scary is that!

An OT can be 100% owner of a PT clinic. That might explain why an OT is the president of the college!

So the good ship PT is lost and adrift with sails flapping in Ontario? Quick, someone get on and grab that wheel.
