PT or OT? - May 28, 2006 10:29:00 AM

Hi all,
I'm a newcomer....I decided to switch from pre-med to pre-PT/pre-OT. I did a little bit of shadowing and I noticed that both these professions are great and seem a lot similar. I really cant decide what to choose. I figured out hat getting into OT school is a bot easier compared to PT school..

I wish to know if there was any possibility where an OT could get a PT degree through advanced standing..

I don't know of any OT's becoming PT's just based on experience. They would have to go through an accredited program and put in the time in class just like the rest of us. Is that what you meant?
If you are trying to decide between the two, ask yourself what types of patients do you want to see? OT's are generally concerned with activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, eating, driving) that sort of thing. They tend to work on fine motor skills more than PT's. PT's tend to be concerned with gross motor skills and treat more spinal problems. This is a huge generalization as there are PT's who are hand specialists and OT's who treat gross motor activities like gait training, etc. I don't know if OT's treat spines. I think PT's as a profession are moving more quickly towards autonomous practice which might interest you more if you were originally going to med school.
The two professions do overlap quite a bit. You may want to check out the APTA website (www.apta.org) for more information.

Definitely agree with the above post. A lot of time to consume if you become a PT/OT and then decide to choose to go to the other profession.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I reallyt like both professions but I was always thinking that PTs do "more" compared to OTs. Is it true that PTs do more tasks than OTs? I also would like to know about which are more demanded in the medical field---PTs or OTs? My college counselor was telling me that there was a time where PTs were in surplus....I really hope that doesnt happen.
Thanks

If by tasks you mean more involvement with a patients deficits, i believe that is a true statement.
PT's in a nutshell treat the patient as a "whole" in other words we deal w/ the entire body when it comes to dysfunction/deficits. Where as the OT's deal w fine motor skills and activities of daily living (for the most part) both equally important.
I went to PT school in Texas and I heard that same statement from other OT students " I wish i would have applied to PT school , but i think it would have been too hard or wont get in"...
Hey, this is what i say , God has given you a talent and determination ...so dont daydream about it just do it!! quit the buts, would of's and could of's and follow what your passion.
if your passion is to be a physical therapist, then you will be stepping into one of the most secure jobs in healthcare (no surplus here). You can be a great diagnostician of musculoskeletal conditions. work on impacting pnts lives, by getting them back on their feet!! from stroke pnts to your chronic low back pain that has dealt w/ the problem for years until you layed your hands on them...Im sorry but if that doesnt get your motors running, i dont what will (I got all reved up now, i have to go grab me a pnt !)

Regarding OT's, i dont about you but choosing b/t walking and squeezing my hands, ill choose walking!!. What we provide is unique and rewarding in all aspects. I feel OT's job market is not as secure as it is for PTs. Most hospitals, clinics, homehealth agencies etc have more PT's in their staff than they do OTs.
Good luck

My opinion you should go to chiropractic school. You would find that it fits the total scope of practice that you are looking for as either an OT or PT. (In most states at least). I would recommend a college with a strong evidenced based curriculum like Western States Chiropractic College in Portland, OR (I am just finishing my degree there), Los Angeles Chiropractic College, or National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, IL. I'd be happy to answre any questions you might have about the profession or the education. G'Luck, whatever you decide.

I went to USA but I wouldn't rec getting a dual degree. There is no financial benefit and you will only be paid for 1 of your services...oh, but don't worry, you will be marketed for both!

If you want to be a certified hand therapist than do it as a PT (I work with a PT who is a CHT).

Jason Young,
where is the above post does it say he wants to go to DC school??

Ben,

From what i remember from our last conversation, it went something like this:
You: "Ill be out of town next week doing things for my DPT, I'll call you when I get back"
Me: "Ok, and if I dont hear from you I'll call you", So I guess neither of us held up our end. Actually I ended up shooting up to Atlanta for a contract after WPB, and now im out in Phoenix, AZ at a permanent job. So to make a short story long, yeah I left FLA.

don't totally blame you! Things are good for me here, but I wouldn't recommend it to too many people. Congrats on the finding a home.
