Hello I am a soon to be DPT student (hopefully) and although I'm not planning to open up a clinic any time soon.. my quick question..is it worth it for people to open up clinics in an area which is already clustered with them? In Brooklyn, NYC I see PT offices on almost every block now. Is that still worth it?

Personally, I don't think it is a wise idea. Those already in the neighborhood have their patient caseload and are constantly trying to get patients from each other. They know the tricks and if and buts about it. Throwing yourself in the mix, without a good source of referrals and know how, will only make your clinic empty. You have to set up where PT is not commonly set up but close enough to MD's to get referrals. A wise instructor told me this once.

As JMA stated,
Currently not a wise move until you can somehow build a good rapport with many MD's or find a place less congested. Either that or you can try joining cetain MD referral networks (Hosp for Special Surgery, etc), but they do not accept just anyone.
Nef, are you starting school in the fall or are you in the application process?

Actually am still finishing up the prereqs. I have physics 2,anatomy and phisiology 2, and chemistry left.. wow I guess that is all of them lol but I plan to finish them before the spring (school offers a winter module)and apply. Since we are on the subject, does choosing one accredited school over another benefit later with the employment process? People who know "things" tell me that all schools do is prepare you and teach you to be able to pass the exam so it does not matter which one you go to and what matters most importantly is not the name of some school but the people you know. So yeah I am a long way from even thinking about opening anything but just being curious.

Nef, In response to your last post. There is a difference in schools. All PT schools DO NOT just prepare you to take board exams. Some schools have great research programs and some prepare you for clinical practice better than others. I am in my last semester at the University of St. Augustine and it is a great school to get a good foundation in manual therapy. Getting a job after school is not the issue. You want to get the best education you can so you can be prepared to become a good clinician. I was in your position several years ago and getting advice from practicing PT's was extremely helpful. There are lots of great PT schools, but remember they are not all equal.

Nef,
You are a long way from opening up a clinic. Do not fear competiton. No matter where you go, someone could open up right next door........
Be strong at what you do and have a top notch place. A successful patient will be your best referral source.
Bring the noise,
Tom

Well said, Tom.
There will always be a market for quality, individualized services that respect the client's perspective and provide value not available elsewhere. Do that and you'll never be out of work...

You have a great looking clinic Tom. Do you work all those hours or do you have help?
