Situation : a sister facilty loses their PT and asks help in doing evals so the PTA can begin treatment. Is the PT ethically correct in refusing to cosign subsequent notes by the PTA if the PT is called upon only to do the evals to initiate treatment and has no other contact with either the PTA or the patient ?

My reaction would be that it is unethical for this PT to cosign notes... Yet, you see situations like this all the time....doesn't make them the right thing to do tho... I would suggest that if this is the case, that designated times need to be made to discuss the shared patients and their treatment plans. Then, depending on what the exact regulations are, the PT needs to make direct contact with the patients every so many sessions... I'm not that familiar with the exact legality of supervising a PTA, as where I have been employed there are none.

But.......that's my gut reaction to the situation

My understanding of my limited work in geriatric subacute and home care was that that a PT must see a patient once every 10 visits. It was not however clear to me if this was state law, federal law, or simply the policy of the organizations for which I was working. If not law or regulation, it's curious to me that both practices would have had the same policy.

I seem to recall that this was a HCFA regulation, but I'll have to get clarification on this. Does anyone know for sure?
