Hey guys, i just wanted to ask a few questions about the job. Heres my situation, I'm currently an exercise science major at a major university in florida and am thinking about pt as a possible profession.

I was thinking about trying out pta to see if the field is a fit for me first before I commit myself to an intense program like pt school (I'm sure pta school is challenging too). So I was just wondering what a day in the life of a PTA is like, the good and bad about the job, do pta's usually have an easier time in pt school? Things like that. Any feed back will be appreciated, thanks.

Hi, I am not sure how PTA school as I am in PT school currently. However, I have heard there are very few PTA to PT bridge programs (generally, they are considered 2 separate degrees and usually don't transfer over to "shorten" PT schooling). There are a couple out there, but you will be prolonging your schooling and increasing costs. That being said, the best way to get a feel for the profession is finding a PT practice to work at as an aide or to volunteer/observe (in a hospital, outpatient clinic, childrens hospital, etc). Doing this will do 2 things: 1. Help you see what a typical day for a PT/PTA is and gives you the opportunity to directly ask questions and establish rapport for potential recommendations. 2. If you do apply to schools, it gives you a start on the required hours to get into schools. On what I've experienced in PT school, it is rigorous, but very fun (as I'm sure PTA school is.) Being an exercise science major should help a little initially. Although variable, PTA's make much less than PT's if your concerned at all about income....good luck.

Hi,
I am a PTA and love my job. I think the suggestions to volunteer or observe in a clinic or hospital with a PTA/PT would be helpful. On the whole most of the PT's that I have worked with respect my training and my opinion but I have always known that the PT has a lot more education than I have and I have tried not to overstep my scope of practice. I also ask a lot of questions. If you are able I would not go to PTA school with the thought of then going to PT school, it would just take two years out of your time that you could put towards being a PT. Anyway, good luck to you.

Peggy

Go to the open forum and check the "Do you like your job?" thread for some real good, first hand insight to the PT/Rehab profession as a whole.
